About Professor Deborah Kemp and the Scholarship Mission

Professor Deborah Kemp MSSW, LCSW, BCD

With more than 27 years in clinical social work, Professor Deborah Kemp is a passionate force for empowerment—dedicated to helping others rise, grow, and achieve their goals. As the founder and benefactor of the Tracy Wheeler and Precious Leshay Johnson Nursing Scholarship, she champions unconventional college students—especially mothers—encouraging them to pursue higher education in nursing, social work, business, or any path that reflects their bold, “think outside the box” passion.

Deborah’s journey began with her BSW from Western Kentucky University in 1998 and her MSSW from the Kent School of Social Work in 2001. She has served in child welfare, led regional family preservation programs, and supported countless individuals through crisis, healing, and reunification.

Her commitment to underserved communities continued as a dual diagnosis therapist, where she guided individuals facing both mental health and substance use challenges. She also helped launch an early Drug Court partnership, using a strengths-based approach to reconnect people with recovery, housing, and purpose.

Today, Deborah serves as Program Manager for the Post-9/11 Military to Veteran Case Management Program, where she has spent over 17 years making a lasting impact. A former adjunct professor and dedicated LCSW supervisor, she continues to mentor emerging social workers with both wisdom and heart—often reminding them to see the whole person, mind and body alike.

As co-owner of Anti-Racism4U, Deborah brings her voice to national stages, advancing justice, equity, and meaningful change across communities and organizations. Above all, she is a devoted wife, mother, mentor, and woman of faith.

Through the Precious Leshay Johnson Nursing Scholarship and the Tracy Wheeler Service Scholarship, Deborah’s mission is clear: to open doors, uplift dreams, and empower determined individuals to succeed—no matter how tough the journey may be.

“I think every individual has his or her own power, and it’s a matter of working, taking time and defining what that power is.” -Jill Scott
